Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she had spoken with Australia's ambassador to Turkey, James Larsen, following the possible attempted military coup.
She said the situation was "currently highly fluid".
"Our priority is the safety of Australian citizens in Turkey. Australians in Turkey should be vigilant, monitor media, follow the direction of local authorities and advise friends and family in Australia that they are safe," Ms Bishop said.
"The travel advice for Turkey has been updated to reflect the unfolding developments. The overall level of advice has not changed."
DFAT says anyone with concerns for the welfare of family and friends in the region should first attempt to contact them directly.
If you are unable to contact them directly and still hold concerns for their welfare, you should call the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's 24-hour Consular Emergency still Centre on 1 300 555 135, or +61 2 6261 3305 (if calling from overseas).

Best duration of stay in Turkey
The Western coast of Turkey can be visited in 7 days, but for the basic circle Turkey Tour around the country will require at least 10 days. Considering the size of the country we recommend Turkey tours of a minimum 10 to 14 days duration to experience the most important sites of Turkey. Comprehensive tours of 16 or more days will let you see hidden treasures of Eastern Turkey and the Black Sea or allow a combination of Turkey coach tour and gullet cruises. We also offer Turkey to Greece tours that start in Turkey and finish in Greece to save you both time and money. Tours in the opposite direction from Greece to Turkey can be found in our Greece brochure. ANZAC Day Tours can be found in our online ANZAC Day brochure. We also have Gallipoli tours.
Must See Sites in Turkey
Turkey has many Must See Sites to choose from, but highlights would include the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and St Sophia in Istanbul. The Bridge spanning the Bosporus linking Europe with Asia in Istanbul is also quite a spectacular site. It's almost impossible for an Australian visitor to ignore Gallipoli tours and it's special place in our hearts related to our ANZAC history. The Fairy Chimney's at Cappadocia are an incredible sight that some clients underestimate before actually going there and seeing it for themselves. Ephesus is one of the best preserved and most impressive Roman cities anywhere in the former Roman Empire.
Unique Experiences in Turkey
With many of our tours we offer clients unique experiences such as participation in The Dawn service at ANZAC Cove with our ANZAC Day tours or lunch in a traditional Turkish village with locals. Many of our Turkey tours offer unique dining experiences. Don’t miss a balloon ride to marvel at the pinnacle landscape of Cappadocia, described by many as a 'must do' experience.
